Epiglottitis
Epiglottitis is an acute bacterial infection of the epiglottis, which is the flap of tissue at the back of the throat that covers the trachea when a person swallows. It is a potentially life-threatening condition because the swelling of the epiglottis can cause it to block the airway. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, a high fever, and a sore throat. Treatment usually involves antibiotics and sometimes a procedure to remove the epiglottis. Early diagnosis and treatment is important, as serious complications can occur if the airway becomes blocked. Epiglottitis is rare, but should be considered in anyone presenting with a sore throat and sudden difficulty breathing.
