Barrett s Esophagus
Barrett’s esophagus is a condition that affects the lower portion of the esophagus, the tube that transports food from the mouth to the stomach. It is the result of chronic acid reflux and is associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer. A person with Barrett’s esophagus will often experience heartburn, regurgitation, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus is made through endoscopy, and treatment generally involves lifestyle modifications and medications to reduce acid reflux. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended to repair the damaged esophageal lining. Early diagnosis and treatment of Barrett’s esophagus can help to reduce the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
