Rinderpest

Rinderpest, sometimes called cattle plague, is a viral disease that affects hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, buffalos, and deer. One of the most devastating diseases of livestock in history, it has been eliminated worldwide by vaccination—an incredible success story in the history of animal health! Rinderpest is caused by a Morbillivirus, and symptoms include fever, diarrhea, and in severe cases, death. Vaccines have successfully eradicated the disease in all parts of the world, drastically reducing mortality in animals and contributing to improved food security. Rinderpest vaccination is still an important part of animal health programs in many countries, and efforts continue to ensure that the disease does not reemerge.
