Melioidosis

Melioidosis is a serious and potentially fatal infectious disease caused by the soil bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. It occurs primarily in Southeast Asia and northern Australia, but is becoming increasingly recognized in other parts of the world. Symptoms of melioidosis can range from mild to severe and may come on suddenly or develop gradually over weeks to months. Severe cases are characterized by pneumonia with abscesses, septicemia, and organ failure. Treatment requires long-term antibiotics and supportive care, and can lead to full recovery. Melioidosis is a serious public health concern and is associated with significant mortality rates. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for successful outcomes.
