Listeria
monocytogenes Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium that is an important human pathogen and foodborne illness-causing organism. It is found in soil, water, and food, and while it can cause asymptomatic food poisoning in humans, it can also be life-threatening in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, newborns and the elderly, leading to meningitis, bacteraemia, and abortion. Prevention is key to controlling Listeria monocytogenes infections and the effective use of good food safety practices, such as proper cooking, effective sanitizing, and safe handling of food, are essential.
