Kala-azar

Kala-azar, also known as Visceral Leishmaniasis, is an infectious disease caused by the Leishmania parasite. It mainly affects people in tropical and subtropical regions, where it is spread by the bite of a sand fly. Symptoms of Kala-azar can include fever, weight loss, anemia, and enlargement of the spleen and liver. Without treatment, it can be fatal. Thanks to increased research, effective treatments are now available, such as with pentavalent antimonials or liposomal amphotericins. Early detection is key for successful treatment. It is important to work towards reducing its prevalence due to its potentially deadly consequences.
