Infectious Diseases Prion Diseases
Prion diseases are infections caused by misfolded proteins known as prion proteins. These proteins originate from normal proteins found in the brains of animals, including humans. Prion diseases can be inherited due to a genetic mutation, or can be acquired through infectious agents like food, water, or contact with infected animals. Infectious prion diseases can be fatal and there is no cure. Symptoms can vary depending on the strain of prion disease and may include difficulty thinking, behavioral changes, and impaired coordination. Proper diagnosis and treatment of prion diseases is essential in order to reduce transmission of the infection and improve the quality of life of those affected.
