Gastrointestinal Infections
Gastrointestinal (GI) infections are caused by a variety of germs such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. These infections can lead to a range of symptoms, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. They are usually treated with antibiotics, anti-parasitic medication, or antiviral medications. GI infections can be very serious, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immunity, and can cause dehydration, malnutrition, and even death. Proper hygiene, safe drinking water, and safe food preparation are the best ways to prevent GI infections. Vaccines are also available for some infections, such as rotavirus. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to reduce the risk of potentially life-threatening complications.
