Enterobiasis

Enterobiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), a small, white-colored roundworm found in the human intestines. It is the most common type of worm infection in the United States and is easily spread between people. The pinworm is typically acquired through the ingestion of contaminated food and water. Symptoms of enterobiasis include intense itching in the anus, irritability, abdominal pain, and sleep disturbances. Pinworm infections are easily diagnosed with the use of a microscope to identify the eggs and adult worms in the stool or on the perianal area. Treatment of enterobiasis involves the administration of a single dose of a prescription medication (such as mebendazole or albendazole) to kill the adult worms. Enterobiasis is an important condition to recognize and treat as it can lead to other bacterial infections of the digestive tract. Early diagnosis and treatment of pinworm infections can help prevent the spread of the worm to other people and reduce the risk of more serious complications.
