byproducts Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are chemical compounds formed when chlorine or other disinfectants used to treat drinking water react with organic and inorganic matter in the water. They are a potential health concern as high concentrations of certain DBPs in drinking water have been linked to adverse health effects such as increased cancer risk and reproductive and developmental problems. However, proper water treatment, monitoring and regulation can reduce DBPs to safe levels below the maximum levels set by regulatory agencies. DBPs are also of environmental concern, especially in the concentration of combined chlorine, which can cause toxic effects to aquatic life.
