Blastomycosis

Blastomycosis is an uncommon fungal infection caused by a fungus called Blastomyces dermatitidis. It is found in the soil and decaying wood, especially in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The fungus can be inhaled, leading to an infection in the lungs and other areas such as the skin, bones and central nervous system. Symptoms may include fever, chest pain, weight loss, coughing, and skin lesions. Treatment involves antifungal medications, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are important to prevent long-term complications.
