Petroleum Geology

Petroleum geology is the branch of geology that studies the origins, occurrence, and exploration of underground oil and gas deposits. It is a complex field, which combines aspects of sedimentary, structural and stratigraphic geology, paleontology, geochemistry and engineering. The goal of petroleum geology is to identify and pinpoint possible sources of petroleum, then determine the most efficient way to produce and refine it. Petroleum geology helps in determining the commercial viability of an oil or gas reservoir, and assists in its safe and sustainable exploitation. In addition, it plays an important role in predicting future trends in petroleum production and refining. It is an invaluable tool for the oil and gas industry, and helps to ensure secure and reliable energy supplies.
