Petroleum Geochemistry

Petroleum geochemistry is the study of the chemical composition of petroleum (crude oil and natural gas). It is a powerful tool used to understand and interpret the formation, migration, and alteration of hydrocarbon deposits. It is used to evaluate and predict the potential of petroleum reservoirs and their quality, relative to other reservoirs. Petroleum geochemistry has applications in exploration, production, reservoir engineering, and environmental management. It is important in petroleum exploration and production as it provides information about the origin, maturity and quality of petroleum reservoirs, which helps assess the economic viability of a given prospect or reservoir and inform decisions on future development.
