Compaction/diagenesis
Compaction/diagenesis is a process by which sediment is changed into rock over time. It occurs when pressure from overlying layers of sediment is applied to layers of sediment beneath, and causes the particles to become tightly packed together. This process can also result in physical and chemical changes in the sediment, such as the formation of cementing agents that bind the particles together in a solid mass. This can have a significant impact on the structure and composition of sedimentary rocks. As such, the study of compaction/diagenesis can provide important clues in the geological analysis of sedimentary rocks, and can be a key factor in understanding the history of a region. It is also used to inform the evaluation of potential petroleum reservoirs and other resources.
