Alkylation
Alkylation is a chemical process used to modify organic molecules through the addition of an alkyl group. It is a widely used process in the production of pharmaceuticals, dyes, perfumes, and plastics. Additionally, alkylation is used to refine gasoline to create a fuel with a higher octane rating, which reduces the prevalence of engine "knock" caused by high compression ratios and allows for higher engine efficiency. Alkylation has great significance in the field of chemistry, as it enables scientists to modify the properties of molecules for a wide range of applications.
