Neostriatum
The neostriatum is the largest nucleus in the basal ganglia of the mammalian brain. It consists of dense neuronal networks associated with the control of movement and learning. Neostriatum has been connected to the regulation of behaviors such as motivation, reward-based learning, working memory processing, and a variety of cognitive and affective processes. Studies suggest that it is involved in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Tourette syndrome and drug addiction. With its complex network of connections to other brain regions, neostriatum plays an important role in understanding how the brain functions, and how diseases of the neural circuits can arise.
