Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic, inflammatory rheumatic disease that primarily affects the axial skeleton, which includes the vertebrae, hips, and ribs. It is a type of spondyloarthritis, involving an immunologically driven inflammatory process that can lead to severe disability, including irreversible spinal fusion. It most commonly begins in young adulthood and can cause severe pain and stiffness, as well as fatigue. There is no cure for AS, but treatments are available to improve symptoms, prevent complications, and reduce the risk of permanent joint damage. These treatments include exercise and physical therapy, pain medications, anti-inflammatory medications, and biologic medications. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential for those living with AS in order to improve the quality of life.
