Geriatric Cardiology

Geriatric cardiology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases in the elderly. It is important to understand the unique needs of elderly patients and how diseases may be caused or aggravated by physiological changes due to aging. Treatments tailored to the elderly can help to improve long-term quality of life and longevity. Common conditions managed by geriatric cardiologists include coronary artery disease, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, and cardiac arrhythmias. Geriatric cardiology is also important for assessing and treating elderly patients who are undergoing other treatments such as cancer or neurological diseases, as cardiovascular diseases are often associated with these.
