Coronary Syndromes
Coronary syndromes refer to a group of conditions that affect the coronary arteries, the arteries that supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart. These syndromes are important to recognize as they are a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide and can lead to life-threatening heart attacks or stroke. Coronary syndromes include unstable angina, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and are primarily diagnosed by electrocardiogram (ECG) tests and imaging studies. Treatment of coronary syndromes may involve lifestyle modification, such as physical exercise, smoking cessation and dietary changes, as well as pharmacological treatments, such as anti-platelet agents, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers. Early diagnosis and management of these syndromes can help reduce the risk of a major cardiovascular event.
