Congenital Heart Diseases
Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are heart conditions present at birth. They are the most common type of birth defect, estimated to affect 8 out of every 1,000 babies. They can range from mild to severe, and can affect different aspects of the heart, including the heart's outflow tracts, valves, blood vessels, and chambers. Treatment depends on the nature and severity of the heart defect, and may include medications, catheterization, or surgery. Congenital heart diseases can cause structural, electrical, and mechanical defects to the heart, leading to a decreased quality of life if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications, and improve the quality of life for those individuals affected.
