Trauma Informed Care
Trauma Informed Care is an approach to providing mental and behavioral health services that is based on an understanding of the impact of traumatic experiences on individuals. It is designed to help individuals struggling with the effects of trauma and to reduce the risk that further trauma will be caused by their interactions with mental health professionals. Trauma Informed Care is focused on creating a safe and supportive therapeutic environment, with an emphasis on building trust and respect between patient and clinician, and recognizing the mutual influence of the two, with the goal of promoting healing, health, and overall wellbeing. The approach is valuable in a variety of settings including primary care, psychiatry, social work, addictions treatment, and counseling, and in working with people experiencing a range of mental and physical health issues.
