Pigment Epithelium of Eye

The pigment epithelium of the eye is a layer of cells in the back of the eye that produces melanin and regulates the amount of light that enters the eye. It is essential for vision as it functions to provide contrast and depth of field, improve night vision and colour perception, and also protect the other layers of the eye from excessive light. The pigment epithelium also plays a key role in the healing process after injury to the eye and is critical for healthy eyesight. Disruption of the pigment epithelium layer can cause a range of vision problems and can even lead to complete vision loss. In order to maintain healthy vision, it is important to take care of the pigment epithelium of the eye.
