Ocular Myasthenia Gravis
Ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG) is a medical condition defined by fatigable weakness of the ocular muscles, which leads to drooping of the eyelids and double vision. It is the most common form of myasthenia, an autoimmune disorder that causes weakening of the skeletal muscles. OMG is caused by antibodies, produced by the immune system, that disrupt the normal interaction between the nerve and muscle cells. Treatment primarily consists of medications that suppress the patient's immune system and reduce the severity of symptoms. Additionally, surgery may be used to correct severe cases that inhibit the patient's vision. Ocular myasthenia gravis is considered a serious disorder, as it can lead to permanent damage of the eye muscles, but proper diagnosis and treatment can successfully manage the condition.
