miRNAs (microRNAs) are short, non-coding RNA molecules that are involved in gene expression. They are involved in regulating the expression of both proteins and non-coding RNAs, and play a role in a wide range of biological processes. miRNAs act by binding to the 3' untranslated regions of target mRNAs, resulting in post-transcriptional gene silencing. miRNAs have been implicated in the regulation of a variety of cellular processes including development, cell differentiation and apoptosis. They are also thought to play a role in diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders. The discovery of miRNAs has opened a new area of research in the field of genetics and molecular biology, and their potential as a therapeutic treatment modality is currently being explored.
