Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a common eye condition, caused by blockages or inflammation of the meibomian glands. These glands are located in the eyelids and produce an oily substance (meibum) which helps to protect the eye’s surface and keep it lubricated. When these glands are blocked, meibum can't be secreted, leading to dry eye symptoms. MGD is often the underlying cause of dry eyes, and can lead to vision disturbances, discomfort and other eye problems. Treatment of MGD aims to unblock any obstruction, reduce inflammation, and restore the normal function of the meibomian glands. This can be achieved through the use of lubricating eye drops, topical creams and/or oral medications, or physical treatments such as warm compresses and lid massages.
