Gonioscopy
Gonioscopy is an ophthalmic medical procedure used to examine the angle between the iris and the cornea. This angle is known as the anterior chamber angle (ACA). An abnormally narrow or closed ACA increases the risk of acute or chronic glaucoma, a serious ocular condition which can lead to vision loss. Therefore, gonioscopy is an important tool used to detect and monitor glaucoma in any patient with an increased risk of the disease, as well as in any patient with a sudden change in vision or eye pressure. The procedure is safe, painless and quick. During the procedure, a special type of contact lens is placed on the eye of the patient and is used to view the ACA. This in turn enables the doctor to evaluate the drainage system of the eye, detect any abnormality that can increase the risk of glaucoma, and make an accurate diagnosis.
