Glaucoma and Genetics
Glaucoma is a medical condition that is caused by an increase in the pressure of the fluid inside the eye. Its main symptom is progressive, irreversible vision loss. It is the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Genetics is increasingly being identified as an important factor in the development of glaucoma. Certain mutations in certain genes have been associated with an elevated risk of developing glaucoma, and research is underway to develop more efficient methods for screening people who may be at risk. An improved understanding of the genetic factors involved in glaucoma will help improve diagnosis and treatment of the condition, as well as helping to identify individuals at risk.
