Glaucoma and Exercise
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by damage to the optic nerve due to increased intraocular pressure. Exercise has been found to help reduce intraocular pressure, thus providing a potential treatment for glaucoma. Research has shown that aerobic exercises, like brisk walking, jogging, biking, and swimming, can be effective in reducing the intraocular pressure associated with glaucoma. Additionally, exercises that improve posture and help strengthen the surrounding muscles of the eyes can also be beneficial in reducing the pressure. Exercise can also improve overall health, which can further reduce the risk of developing glaucoma. Though exercise can be used as a complementary treatment for glaucoma, it is recommended to discuss with an eye doctor prior to beginning any kind of exercise program.
