Glaucoma and Ethnicity

Glaucoma is an eye disease that can cause blindness. It is more prevalent among people of certain ethnic backgrounds. This eye disease affects multiple ethnic groups, including African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians, who are at a higher risk for developing glaucoma than other ethnic groups. Early detection and treatment of glaucoma is critical for those at increased risk. The early signs of glaucoma may include blurred vision, halos around lights, or a gradual loss of peripheral vision. Regular eye exams, including assessments for glaucoma, can help detect the disease early, when treatment may be most effective. Treatment may include eye drops, laser treatments, or surgery. It is important for anyone of an ethnicity at greater risk of glaucoma to get regular eye exams to ensure early diagnosis and to protect their vision.
