Planktology

Planktology is the scientific study of plankton, which are small organisms found in freshwater, marine and coastal aquatic environments. Plankton are majorly responsible for driving the primary productivity of the aquatic ecosystems and are important sources of food for many species. They are also important indicators of water quality and can be used to track changes in water temperature and salinity. Because of this, planktology is essential for understanding the ecology of aquatic ecosystems and managing it sustainably. Furthermore, plankton can also be used to monitor biotic and abiotic factors of aquatic systems due to their ability to respond rapidly to environmental changes.
