Myrmecology

Myrmecology is the study of ants and their ecology. Ants are essential components of many terrestrial ecosystems and are important indicators of ecosystem health. They impact on the structure and functioning of their environments, soil and nutrient cycling, decomposition, and food webs. Myrmecology research endeavors to understand processes of population dynamics, social behavior, and interactions between ants and other organisms. It is increasingly used to understand the effects of land use change and climate change on ants, and how ants can be used as bioindicators of environmental disturbances. Research also aims to better understand the impacts of invasive species on native ant populations. Myrmecology has important practical applications in pest control, soil conservation, and forestry.
