Cytoplasmic Streaming

Cytoplasmic streaming is a type of cellular transport whereby a cell's cytoplasm is propelled in a particular direction. Cytoplasmic streaming takes place in many types of cells including unicelluar algae, plants, and some animal cells. This process is important for the correct functioning of the cell as it helps to distribute proteins, organelles and other molecules throughout the cell. Additionally, it is believed to be important in maintaining cell shape and cell-to-cell communication. Cytoplasmic streaming is also thought to play a role in cell differentiation and movement.
