Gamma Variant
Gamma variant is one of the variants of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the virus which causes COVID-19. Also known as the P.1 variant, gamma variant was first detected in Brazil in December 2020. It has since been identified in several countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Gamma variant is of great concern to public health officials because it has been shown to be more transmissible than the original strain of the virus. In addition, studies have suggested that the gamma variant may be more resistant to immunity derived from prior infection or vaccination. This means that people who have already had COVID-19 or who have been vaccinated may be at increased risk for reinfection or breakthrough infection with gamma variant. Despite these concerns, it is important to note that current vaccines are still believed to be largely effective against gamma variant. However, ongoing monitoring and research are necessary to determine the ongoing impact of this variant on the COVID-19 pandemic.
