Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are a class of hormones that are naturally produced by the human body’s adrenal gland, and are involved in a variety of physiological processes. These hormones have been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects and are regularly prescribed as therapeutic agents in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions such as asthma, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Recently, the use of corticosteroids in the treatment of COVID-19 has gained significant attention due to their potential role in reducing mortality rates. Several studies have now investigated the efficacy and safety of corticosteroids in the management of COVID-19, particularly in critically ill patients. One such study, the RECOVERY trial performed in the UK, found that the use of dexamethasone resulted in a 20% reduction in mortality rates among patients requiring oxygen and a 35% reduction among patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. However, there are concerns regarding the potential side effects of corticosteroids which may adversely impact the immune system and increase the risk of secondary infections. As a result, the use of corticosteroids in the treatment of COVID-19 is not recommended for all patients, and should only be used in those who require oxygen support or are critically ill. Therefore, while corticosteroids may have a role to play in the treatment of COVID-19, their use should be carefully weighed against potential risks and benefits, and patients should only be prescribed these medications under the guidance of healthcare professionals.
