Viral Infection
A viral infection occurs when a virus enters the body and causes disease. Viruses can be contagious, meaning they can be spread from person to person or from environment to environment, and they can cause mild to severe symptoms depending on the type of virus. Treatment of viral infections typically includes rest, fluids, and medications to reduce fever, body aches, and other symptoms. Vaccines are currently available for some viruses and are a mainstay of preventing viral infections. Vaccines are especially important for protecting vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and seniors. Taking steps to reduce exposure to viruses, such as frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with sick people, and staying up to date on vaccinations, are important strategies for reducing the risk of viral infections.
