Transplant Rejection
Transplant rejection is a major complication of organ and tissue transplantation. It occurs when the body’s immune system perceives the donor organ as foreign and attacks it. This causes damage to the transplanted organ and can lead to its eventual failure. Transplant rejection can be acute or chronic, and is the leading cause of transplant failure. Treatments are available to reduce the risk of transplant rejection and can include immunosuppressive drugs, organ donation from a family member, and cell-based therapies. It is vital that potential transplant recipients and their families are well educated on the risks of transplant rejection and the available treatments.
