Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a Gram-negative bacteria of the Xanthomonadaceae family, found mainly in hospital environments and in soils contaminated with metals such as copper and zinc. It is a common cause of nosocomial infections, particularly among patients with severe underlying illnesses. In addition to causing severe pneumonia, S. maltophilia is also a common cause of urinary tract infections. It is resistant to many antibiotics and has been observed to be highly transmissible, making it difficult to treat. The most effective treatments for S. maltophilia include combination therapy using appropriate antibiotics and other interventions such as removal of the source of infection. With improved understanding of S. maltophilia, new treatments and prevention strategies are being developed to reduce its burden.
