Properdin
Properdin is a protein found in immune cells which plays an important role in the activation of the classical pathway of complement activation. It binds to foreign pathogens and activates the complement proteins which leads to the destruction of the foreign pathogens. Properdin interacts with several other proteins involved in the classical complement pathway, such as C1, C4 and C2. In addition, Properdin is also involved in the assembly of the C5 convertase enzyme which is responsible for the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC). The role of Properdin in the complement system is crucial for providing protection against microbial infections and for helping maintain the homeostasis of the immune system.
