Prevotella Intermedia

Prevotella intermedia is an anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria that is a common inhabitant of the human oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract and female genitourinary tract. It is a non-spore forming bacterium which is a part of the normal human microbiota. Prevotella intermedia is a significant pathogenic agent of some infection-related diseases such as periodontal diseases, endodontic infections, and can cause skin, surgical and lower respiratory tract infections. In some cases it can also cause septic shock. Its various metabolic pathways and its ability to colonise other bacterial species makes Prevotella intermedia a promising tool in bioremediation applications. It is also being investigated for its potential in bioconversion of cellulosic material.
