Polymicrobial Infections
Polymicrobial infections are those caused by a combination of multiple microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These types of infections are becoming increasingly common due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and increased immunocompromised populations. Understanding these infections is important for clinicians to treat them, as their complexity requires a different approach than what is used for single-organism infections. These infections can lead to serious, sometimes life-threatening, health complications and are thus a growing concern. Treatment includes a combination of antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals, as well as lifestyle and dietary changes to help reduce risk. With proper care and management, polymicrobial infections can be managed successfully.
