Mycetoma

Mycetoma is a chronic fungal or bacterial infection characterized by disfiguring tumours and nodules filled with grains. It is a neglected tropical disease affecting mainly the skin and subcutaneous tissue, primarily in rural areas of tropical and subtropical regions. Mycetoma is both a medical and an economic burden to many people in the developing world due to its chronic and debilitating nature. Treatment is often complex and costly, making it difficult to manage. Early detection and treatment is essential in order to reduce the risk of disfigurement and disability associated with mycetoma. Research is ongoing to develop new methods of diagnosis and treatment in order to improve outcomes for those afflicted.
