Microbiology Microbial Physiology and Metabolism
Microbiology, microbial physiology and metabolism are interrelated branches of science that focus on the study of how microorganisms interact with their environment. Microorganisms are the smallest living organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Microbiology studies the behavior and characteristics of these microorganisms while microbial physiology and metabolism studies their functions. A better understanding of the characteristics and capabilities of these organisms allows us to create better treatments and preventative measures for infectious diseases, develop new methods of food production and preservation, create environmental treatments such as bioremediation, and increase our understanding of the biological processes of all living things. Through research of these fields, advances in biotechnology, medicine, and industry can be made that benefit all of humanity.
