Overview

Microbiology is the scientific study of microorganisms, encompassing bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and protozoa, together with their structure, physiology, genetics, ecology, and interactions with hosts and environments. As a discipline it spans organisms invisible to the naked eye yet central to health, disease, agriculture, and biogeochemical processes. Within this broad field, clinical microbiology is concerned with microorganisms that cause human disease and the laboratory practices used to detect and characterize them. Its core activities include the identification of pathogens, antimicrobial and antifungal susceptibility testing, and the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, which has become a defining public-health challenge. Diagnostic work relies on a combination of culture-based methods and molecular techniques, the latter enabling rapid detection and the screening of variants among bacteria, fungi such as Candida and Aspergillus species, and viruses. Important themes include the mechanisms by which organisms evade therapy, among them resistance genes and biofilm formation that protects communities of cells, and the prevalence and transmission of pathogens responsible for diseases such as enteric fevers and invasive fungal infection. Microbiology also extends into food and environmental microbiology, addressing microbial risk assessment, spoilage and its control, and the safety of the food and water supply, integrating laboratory science with epidemiology and public-health surveillance.
