Lichenology
Lichenology is the branch of science that studies lichens, a type of symbiotic organism composed of a fungus and an algae or a cyanobacteria. By studying lichens, researchers gain insight into how these unique organisms interact with their environment, which in turn provides information on the health of their environment. Lichens have been used for various purposes, including dye production and traditional medicine. They are also important indicators of air quality, since they are sensitive to pollutants. Thus, lichenology is key to understanding the environment, the health of the biosphere, and our relationship to both.
