Brucella

Brucella is a genus of bacteria which can cause a disease in humans called brucellosis. It is most commonly contracted through the consumption of contaminated food products, such as unpasteurized milk, or through contact with an animal that is carrying the bacteria. Symptoms of brucellosis range from mild to severe and can include fever, fatigue, malaise, and joint pain. If left untreated, complications from brucellosis can affect the heart, reproductive organs, and central nervous system. Diagnosis of brucellosis can be obtained through blood tests and a physical examination. Treatment options include antibiotics such as penicillin and tetracycline. Vaccines are available for animals to help prevent the spread of the disease.
