Botulism
Botulism is a potentially fatal food-borne illness caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The toxin can cause paralysis and death if it is not treated quickly. Botulism is most commonly caused by eating contaminated food, but can also occur through wounds contaminated with the bacterium or through inhalation. Botulism can be found in canned or vacuum packed foods that have been improperly prepared, as well as in honey and fruits. It is also a potential bio-terrorism threat. Treatment for botulism revolves around the administration of an antitoxin and supportive care. To prevent the illness, proper food preparation and handling are essential.
