Anaerobes

Anaerobes are a type of bacteria that don't require oxygen for their metabolism and growth. They play an important role in the global carbon cycle and are found in nearly every type of ecosystem, from the deep sea to soil, ice, and even inside animals. Certain types of anaerobes produce compounds which can be used for bioremediation and to produce energy, while others are important in food production, such as in the fermentation of yogurt and cheese. Anaerobes have also been used in medical settings to fight infections and to treat chronic diseases like cancer.
