Chemoresistance

Chemoresistance is the ability of a cell or organism to resist the effect of a specific type of drug or other chemical. This phenomenon can occur due to a variety of reasons, such as mutations in the cells’ metabolic pathways that render the drug ineffective or due to the cells’ physical or metabolic protection mechanisms. Chemoresistance is an important factor in the therapy of cancer and other diseases, as it reduces the effectiveness of treatments, resulting in ineffective outcomes. To counter this effect, researchers are constantly searching for new strategies to better understand and overcome chemoresistance. Such strategies include developing new drug combinations, altering dosing regimens, and exploiting resistance mechanisms. In this way, researchers hope to improve treatment outcomes for those suffering from cancer, infectious diseases and other disorders.
