Peroxisomes

Peroxisomes are organelles that are found in eukaryotic cells and are essential components of their cell metabolism. They produce hydrogen peroxide as a by-product and break down fatty acids, amino acids, and toxins. Peroxisomes also have a crucial role in maintaining the cellular redox balance required for normal cell functioning and are important for the growth and development of organisms. Peroxisomal dysfunctions are linked to a range of diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Zellweger syndrome, making them important for medical research.
