Flagella
Flagella are long, thin, whip-like organelles found on eukaryotic cells and bacteria. Their primary role is cell motility, which is vital for movement of organelles and substances within cells, as well as for the transport of organisms. Flagella are typically composed of microtubules and motor proteins, which together allow for a swift, reversible movement, allowing for the efficient search and capture of nutrients. In addition to their involvement in motility and transport, flagella also organize cell structures, regulate gene expression, and interact with other species. Their presence has implications for numerous processes, including microbiome balance, the maintenance of homeostasis, and the development of disease.
